June 17, 2010: Sorosoro in El Pais
Sorosoro pushing media boundaries!
The Spanish weekly El Pais has published an article on the safeguard of endangered languages and cultures, this Thursday, June 17.
How does a language die out? asks journalist José Luis Aranda. While one language out of two is threatened with extinction nowadays, having a clear understanding of a languages disappearing process remains a difficult task, as comments linguist Colette Grinevald, member of our scientif board: One is never sure that a person is the last to speak their language.
Yet there are many signs hinting to the dangers of a widespread cultural homogenization. Sorosoro Director Rozenn Milin recalls a striking memory of Turkish Kurdistan, in the 80s. Standing on the square of a remote village, she jumped as she realized which was the only TV programme to be broadcasted in the area. What kind of programme could possibly be catching the people’s attention so much? Well, Dallas.
