June 10, 2011: Application deadline for linguist position at Aboriginal Language Centre, Australia
The Wangka Maya Pilbara centre for aboriginal languages is seeking a qualified linguist to join its team in the Pilbara region, particularly rich in languages and cultures.
The successful applicant will be running the project and will have to develop good relationships with the Aboriginal communities.
Work will consist in documenting the languages of the region and producing resources aimed at the local community, the general public and the linguistic community. More specifically, the successful applicant will be recording and analyzing these languages, as well as ensuring all work is properly archived in digital format for access and posterity.
He/she will also be supporting language workers with mentoring and informal training.
Applicants must hold a tertiary qualification in linguistics, skills in linguistic documentation (data collection, transcription, analysis), and the ability to use or learn standard linguistic software and technology. He/she should also be able to work within a team and have strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
A driving license is a must, as the applicant will be traveling to remote communities.
Experience working in Aboriginal communities and some knowledge of Aboriginal languages will be greatly appreciated.
The salary is $63 699/year, plus various allowances.
