January 29, 2011 : BabelEyes show at Anis Gras, Arcueil, France.
BabelEyes is a unique musical and multimedia show composed by Philippe Kadosh, an “ethnopera of Endangered Languages” as he likes to call it.
Composed for voice, sinfonietta orchestra and ethnic percussions, this at once poetic, sociological, linguistic, and musical journey allows the audience to apprehend the issue of endangered languages and disappearing cultures through an artistic approach.
The purpose is unusual: Philippe Kadosh speaks of “virgin BabelEyes languages”, meaning languages inspired from endangered languages, which are heard over a background of original compositions influenced by various musical cultures: classical music, odd rhythms of the Balkans, Middle Eastern and Far Eastern melodies, African, Indian, Spanish and Brazilian beats.
The whole delivers a music with ethnic echoes, created around speech sounds and playing with the acoustic, phonetic, graphic and visual material of world languages.
Four musicians perform live: Sardinian singer Valentina Casula, flutist Lena Gutka, cellist Mimi Sunnerstam (cello of the Saami indigenous people) and Philippe Kadosh.
They accompany the sounds and virtual songs of Brazilian singer Tetê Espindola and Indians from the Pareci tribe (Matto Grosso, Brazil).
On Monday 13 December Philippe Kadosh and Valentina Casula were Bruno Letort’s guests on his Radio France Musiques show called “Tapage Nocturne”, which can be downloaded for a period of two weeks.
This show is supported by “Culturesfrance” and the Brazilian Ministry of Culture. Next performance will be Saturday January 29, 2011.
