November 2nd 2010 : 5 MPs announce introduction of a bill on regional languages in France.
In a common statement, MPs from Finistère Jean-Jacques Urvoas, Patricia Adam, Marylise Lebranchu, Annick Le Loch and Gilbert Le Bris, expressed their satisfaction :
« The study group on regional languages to the National Assembly has just finished writing a bill which will be introduced within the next few days. The spirit of the text is quite independant of party affiliations, and it is supported by majority as well as opposition MPs. Its chances of being put on the Parliament’s agenda are thus increased ».
They added : « It is an extremely ambitious bill, which overcomes all the legal obstacles which today thwart the substantial efforts often made by associations and local authorities in promoting the development of these languages ».
Admittedly this is not the first time such a text is brought up, and we may ask ourselves if it stands a chance of succeeding now. The question of regional languages usually sparks off fierce debate in France, and despite electoral promises progress on this issue remains at a snail’s pace…
