September 12-24, 2010: The 4th « Festival des Arts Mélanésiens » takes place in New Caledonia this year. A great opportunity to shed some light on this year’s five guests (Fidji, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and New Caledonia) which in spite of their relatively small size, bear close to 1000 languages out the ca. 6000 spoken over the planet.

September 17, 2010: Do not miss the screening of « la Prophétie de Piatsaw » at the Latin American Cultural Center, in Paris! This beautiful documentary raises the efforts of the Zapara population to revitalize its language and culture, in Ecuador and Peru.
September 21-22, 2010: The Kanak Language Academy holds a symposium on Melanesian languages in Nouméa, within the ongoing festival devoted to the arts of Melanesia.
September 26, 2010: The schedule of the 8th « Forum de Libération », curated by the French daily paper Libération and held in Lyon, France, includes a whole session devoted to endangered languages. Linguist and member of the Sorosoro scientific board Colette Grinevald will be speaking on the “sustainability” of languages.
