The marriage of Ogoula & Ilombè (part 2)
Last week we presented the first part of a tale recorded in the Mpongwe community, on the outskirts of Libreville, Gabon: the tale of Ogoula and Ilombè.
Jean-Félix Ayenouet, one of the last great storytellers of the region, told us this story staging some of the « usual characters » of the Mpongwe oral tradition: Ogoula, Ilombè, Ranyambyè, Esérèngila and a few others…
Linguist Patrick Mouguiama-Daouda, who has made this film possible, provided us with a few keys to understand who these characters are. You’ll find this introduction here.
In this first part we met the main character of the story, Ogoula, a poor young man, son of Maséri. Near the river, Ogoula met Ilombè, daughter of the cruel and bloodthirsty king Ranyambyè, and fell in love with her. Ilombè brought him back with her to her village where he is now hiding… will the lovers eventually be able to be together?
” Osengè limbini…”
