January 24, 2017 : A canadian movie spoken entirely in the Haida language
The canadian producers behind the famous movie Atanarjuat, the fast runner, in which the cast spoke only the Inuktitut language, recently partnered with the Haida First Nation of Canada for a new movie project.
In The Edge of the Knife, we will follow the adventures of Gaagiixid or Gaagiid, the survivor of a disaster at sea, in 19th century Canada. The movie will be written, directed and performed entirely in the two main dialects of Haida, a language with only 24 remaining native speakers living on the archipelago of Haida Gwaii, on the west coast of Canada
All the actors are members of the Haida community and have learned or relearned the language of their ancestors for this occasion. Co-director Gwaai Edenshaw said that the opportunity of promotion the Haida language was the main reason why more and more people were getting involved in this project.
The movie is supported, among others, by Kingulliit Productions, a company that has been working for 30 years for the promotion of indigenous languages and cultures in Canada, mainly the Inuit culture.
The filming of The Edge of the Knife will begin in May and we can expect the movie to be out in theatres by 2018 !
