December 14, 2011: Sami language film “Jon face aux vents” released in France
We can only recommend this beautiful film, created on the land of the Sami (also known as Lap), in northern Scandinavia.
Jon, facing the winds is an account along the seasons of the life of reindeer-hunter Jon, above the polar circle. Transhumance after transhumance, the film takes us with him for better – the harmony with nature, life based on the cycle of seasons and the needs of the reindeers, the work with the community – but also for worse, like the day the ice brakes under the steps of thousands of reindeers, drowning part of the herd.
In a background of sumptuous footage, the film unveils an amazing form of nomadism, where traditional and modern life come together reaching for balance, from snow bikes to long walks in the breathtaking spaces of the Sarek mountains. Beyond the exoticism of life in deep nature, Jon’s warm voice describes this quest for harmony, between technological progress and age-old knowledge.
Directed essentially in Sami language and awarded in several festivals, Jon, facing the winds is a strikingly beautiful film, also questioning our lifestyle and the future of the planet.
