June 29 – July 1st, 2011: Linguistic immersion A-Z workshop, Tuscon, Arizona.
The CILO (Consortium for Indigenous Language Organizations) will be holding its Immersion A-Z: Essential Basics for Language Immersion Programs workshop from June 29 to July 1st, 2011.
The three-day workshop takes place at the University of Arizona, Tuscon, immediately following the 32th AILDI (American Indian Language Development Insitute).
While in June the AILDI offers courses and workshops aiming to provide participants with the means to revitalize their languages through different teaching methods, the CILO workshops will concentrate more specifically on the learning of indigenous languages according to the immersion method.
The workshop provides hands-on experience on language immersion methods, a proven effective way of transmitting language knowledge from one generation to the next in a variety of contexts:
– at home;
– in the community where an elder works with a learner (Master-Apprentice Program);
– to babies in daycare centers;
– to young toddlers at preschool/head start;
– to young children at school.
Participants will learn how to design and implement immersion teaching, create language activities, produce fun and useful materials, and assess the effectiveness of the language immersion program.
