May 10-13, 2011: Puliima Forum in Brisbane, Australia.
The Miromaa Aboriginal Language and Technology Centre is organizing its 3rd Puliima Forum, following the previous editions in Newcastle in 2007 and Melbourne 2009.
The forum aims to bring together people who work on projects related indigenous languages and the communities who speak them, in or outside Australia, to share information, experience and skills, mainly on the use of technology to support their work. The event showcases a variety of programs and tools that support content production in a range of mediums (sound, multi-media, image and print) and enables community users to experience them first hand. It incorporates knowledge of linguistics, educational programs as well as legal, moral and cultural aspects of community language project development.
The Puliima Forum runs over days, May 11, 12 and 13, with a pre-conference gathering on May 10 from 6pm. Schedule includes presentations by international lecturers, seminars, and workshops mainly devoted to the American Indian communities of Canada and USA and the Aboriginal communities of Australia.
Highlights of the event include a separate forum for Indigenous linguists on Friday 13; teachers as well as students, who’ll address issues such as relationships with institutions and non-Indigenous academics, employment opportunities, the development of supportive networks, etc.
