January 10th, 2011 : application deadline for research grants from AIATSIS (Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies).
AIATSIS, an australian institute well-known to all those interested in Aboriginal languages, offers research grants every year to both individuals and organisations.
The range of research areas accepted is very wide : linguistics of course, but also archeology, social anthropology, history (including family and community history), education, indigenous knowledge systems, politics, etc.
Formal qualifications are not required, but applicants must present a clear outline of their research project and demonstrate their ability to carry it out.
It is essential for the Institute that Indigenous peoples be participants in any research project that concerns them, sharing an understanding of the aims and methods of the research, and sharing the results of this work.
Each year, around one third of applications are funded. Over the past three grant rounds, the average number of grants awarded per year was 27. The range of values was from $5,500 to $43,411, and the total funds available for new grants in 2011 will be at least $620,000.
