The National Autonomous University of Mexico (Department for Applied Linguistics of the Foreign Languages Education Center, and “Peninsular Center of Human and Social Science”) will soon be holding the fourth edition of their Symposium on Language Policy in Merida, Yucatan, on the theme “Linguistic processes and globalization”.
This symposium aims to identify and analyse the relationships between language and the process of globalization. The question of education, and especially mother tongue education, will be holding a large part of the discussions. Among other issues to be tackled: revitalization policies, linguistic rights, languages in the media, sociology and more particularly social inequalities linked to languages.
Numerous researchers will be taking part over these three days, and while most of the conferences will be about languages of Mexico and Latin America, some presentations will concern Basque, Kurdish, Nahuatl, and even languages of Ghana and Cameroon.
Speakers are welcome to speak in Spanish, Mayan languages or English.
Keynote speakers are Ofelia García (City University of New York), Héctor Muñoz Cruz (Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana – Iztapalapa) and Fernand de Varennes (Murdoch University, Perth, Australia)
