September 1, 2010 : Presentation proposal deadline for the City University of New York (CUNY) Conference on the Phonology of Endangered Languages in January 2011, NYC.
This conference will evolve around sound patterns in endangered languages. Call for papers is open to any research subject – ongoing or completed – that addresses phonology and phonetics in endangered languages, from any possible perspective. Special attention will be drawn to understudied languages.

The conference will also feature a panel on urban field work from the Endangered Languages Alliance (ELA). Created by two linguists, Professor Daniel Kaufman from New York University, Juliette Blevins from the Linguistics Department of the Leipzig Max Planck Institute, and poet and Professor Bob Holman, ELA aims to list, document and encourage the revitalization of the several endangered languages spoken in NYC.

ELA’s work was recently the subject of an article published in the New York Times and the French review Courrier international. (more info here).

The conference is organized by three departments of the City University of New York (CUNY): The Programme of Linguistics, the Phonology Forum and the Endangered Languages Initiative.
