August 5, 2010: Cut-off date for presentation proposals to the 25th Iowa Culture and Language Conference, Iowa, USA
The 25th annual “Iowa Culture and Language Conference”, organised by the “Northwest Area Education Agency” (AEA), will take place from November 1 to 3, 2010, in Iowa, an opportunity to reflect on the topic of teaching to English Language Learners (ELL), and the possible implications of their families and communities in this process.

A call for papers is open until August 5, and addresses the following subjects:
– Teaching to English language learners (ELL) from early childhood to higher education: practical hints for teachers, literacy, establishment of a program, reflecting on the acquisition of a second language, etc.
– Family and Community involvement. Three main topics: “No child left behind”, “demographics” and “community efforts”.
– Bilingual and native speaking staff: producing guidelines, programs, etc.
– The administration of a school: providing effective educational programs, grant opportunities, budgeting etc.
– Newcomers: skill enhancement for staff who work with newcomer programs, exploration of the traditional cultures of Iowa’s refugees and immigrants – including several sessions sponsored by the Iowa Arts Council and a Division of the Department of Cultural Affairs.

The Northwest AEA is a regional agency that provides school improvement services for students, teachers and administrators: it organises an annual ICLC in order to advocate for culturally and/or linguistically diverse students and their families, educators, as well as service providers.

Presentation application forms are available on the Northwest AEA website. Forms and abstracts must be submitted before August 5, 2010, to Teresa Angerman at Northwest AEA: tangerman@nwaea.k12.ia.us.
