July 23, 2010: What’s new on Sorosoro.org
Videos
Following up on our series on Akele marriage, after the proposal, dowry, polygamy and childbirth, this new video is an account on circumcision, which Papa Kédine already told us a little about last week. Here is his grandson Jean bringing us details on the ceremony and the actual operation as they used to be conducted.
News
It has been a month already since the opening of the amazing Congo River exhibition at the Musée du Quai Branly, Paris, hosting masterpieces of African sculpture which once fascinated Matisse and Picasso. A great opportunity for visitors to discover the cultures that brought these pieces to the world and undertake a journey through the dense history of Bantu languages. Open until October 22, 2010.
Agenda
One more week for linguists to submit their abstracts for presentation at the 12th Language and Society conference held this November 2010 in Auckland, NZ. Deadline: July 31.
Likewise, two more weeks to submit presentation proposals for the 25th Iowa Culture and Language Conference, also held in November, Coralville IA, USA. Deadline: August 5.
Languages & language families
More on the language index front!
In French:
– An improved version of our index on Oniyan, best known as Basari, thanks to the collaboration of Sénélangues project member Loïc-Michel Perrin.
– We’re also grateful to Foromine Souriabe who provides us with an account on Curuma, mainly spoken in Burkina Faso. Thanks to all for your contributions!
In English:
– Nick Thieberger, linguist at Melbourne University (AU), brings us data on South Efate, an Austronesian language spoken in Vanuatu.
Last but not least…
