February 23, 2009: SOAS: Endangered Languages Week in London
SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) organises in London until February 28, a week devoted to endangered languages. Under the direction of Peter Austin, specialist in Australian and Indonesian languages, and member of the scientific Council of Sorosoro, the HRELP (Hans Rausing Endangered Languages Project) wants to increase public awareness of cultural and linguistic diversity.
Conferences, meetings with researchers, movies, music… allows us to discover languages and the different organisations who work on cultural and linguistic diversity, such as the Fondation Chirac.
For instance, SOAS proposes workshops on the Gamilaraay, a language from south-east Australia, or on the Khanty, spoken in north-west Siberia by 13†000 people, one of the smallest ethnic groups in Russia.
Rozenn Milin, Director of the Sorosoro Program at the Fondation Chirac, and Colette Grinevald, another member of the scientific Council of Sorosoro, specialist of Amerindian languages, take part in the debate.
