The 25th annual “Iowa Culture and Language Conference”, organised by the “Northwest Area Education Agency” (AEA), will take place from November 1 to 3, 2010, in Iowa, an opportunity to reflect on the topic of teaching to English Language Learners (ELL), and the possible implications of their families and communities in this process.

A call for papers is open until August 5, and addresses the following subjects:

- Teaching to English language learners (ELL) from early childhood to higher education: practical hints for teachers, literacy, establishment of a program, reflecting on the acquisition of a second language, etc.

- Family and Community involvement. Three main topics: “No child left behind”, “demographics” and “community efforts”.

- Bilingual and native speaking staff: producing guidelines, programs, etc.

- The administration of a school: providing effective educational programs, grant opportunities, budgeting etc.

- Newcomers: skill enhancement for staff who work with newcomer programs, exploration of the traditional cultures of Iowa’s refugees and immigrants – including several sessions sponsored by the Iowa Arts Council and a Division of the Department of Cultural Affairs.

The Northwest AEA is a regional agency that provides school improvement services for students, teachers and administrators: it organises an annual ICLC in order to advocate for culturally and/or linguistically diverse students and their families, educators, as well as service providers.
