The position of Yanyuwa as part of the Pama-Nyungan languages remains unclear
Area: Australia, Northern Territory. McArthur River district, from around Borroloola to the coast, as well as the Pellew Islands at the river mouth.
Number of speakers: A 2005 National Indigenous Languages Survey Report estimated 70 speakers of Yanyuwa, whereas a 2006 Australian Bureau of Statistics Census counted 129.
Language vitality & transmission:
UNESCO considers Yanyuwa to be « severely endangered ».
