May-June 2011 : « Vigo, Babel city», new exhibition at Verbum – Casas das Palabras museum in Vigo, Galicia (Spain)
Opened in late April with the support of UNESCO in Vigo, North-west of Spain, a new exhibition called “Vigo cidade Babel” is now being held at Verbum – Casas das Palabras, an 8 year-old one-off museum.
The city council of Vigo, in the heart of Galicia, wished to reinvigorate this institution, designed as a genuine space of interaction with languages, and affirm the importance of the latter at a time when hundreds of them are being threatened with extinction and when the future of Galician is uncertain.
“Vigo, cidade Babel” is organized in 3 parts:
– the first is devoted to languages in the world and addresses issues of definition, quantification, language-state relations and legal regimes of multilingualism.
– the second focuses on the languages of Spain, without forgetting Arabic of Ceuta, Berber, or even Spanish and Catalan sign languages.
– and the third is assigned to Galician.
The path of the exhibition leads visitors through a series of documents, in particular audiovisual and cartographic ones, specifically designed for it. A virtual tour is also offered on Verbum’s website to all those who won’t be travelling to Galicia.
The exhibition is scheduled in May and June, and will probably be extended until much later.
