February 21, 2011: International Mother Language Day, UNESCO
February 21st has become a significant date for language lovers since the year 2000, when it was proclaimed International Mother Language Day by the UNESCO. Observed by all State Members of the international institution, its objectives are to promote multilingualism and the preservation of languages as part of Human heritage, and remind that the full and free use of one’s mother language in any circumstances is a fundamental right, unfortunately still ignored in many countries.
So every year, this Day brings the opportunity for a great celebration at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, gathering linguists, officials, leaders of associations and ordinary citizens concerned with the safeguard and development of linguistic diversity. The International Mother Language Day also sees numerous cultural activities (poetry readings in schools, exhibitions, plays…) and specific radio and television programs scheduled all around the world.
Main theme of this 2011 edition: « The information and communication technologies for the safeguarding and promotion of languages and linguistic diversity », with the UNESCO bringing together publishers, webmasters, archivists and researchers around the question of new technologies. Each will take their turns introducing today’s existing tools that contribute to the documentation of languages, and thus help resist their extinction more efficiently.
Free admission, subject to seating availability.
