September 17, 2010: Screening of « la Prophétie de Piatsaw », at the Latin American Cultural Center, Paris, France.
Who are the Zapara?
The Zapara are an Amerindian population settled in far out Amazonia, near the border between Ecuador and Peru. Their founder, Piatsaw, had predicted the extinction of the community right from the beginning…
Today they struggle for the safeguard of their identity, and this film by Pierre Bessard raises all these efforts to revitalize their language and culture. There’s the journey of a woman, for example, who sets off to meet several other Indian communities in hope to unveil her own roots and thus reinforce the culture of her people.
Anne-Gaël Bilhaut, ethnologist and specialist of the Zapara, whose means of cultural transmission she has extensively studied, will attend the screening. Her experience will be another light shed on this beautiful documentary.
