September 26, 2009: 9th European Day of Languages
Following the initiative of the Council of Europe (Strasburg), the European Day of Languages is celebrated each year on the 26th September since 2001.
The 800 million of European citizens across the 47 member states of the Council of Europe are encouraged to learn more languages, at every age, as much at school as outside of school. Convinced that linguistic diversity is a way towards a better intercultural communication and one of the key elements of the rich cultural heritage of the continent, the Council of Europe supports plurilingualism across Europe.
