The notion of morpheme shouldn\u2019t be mistaken with the word. Several morphemes can be used for one word. The french word <strong>injustement<\/strong> (\u201cunfairly\u201d) can thus be broken down to three morphemes: in\u2013 (negative prefix), <strong>juste<\/strong> (adjective stem, holding the main signification), \u2013<strong>ment<\/strong> (adverbial derivation suffix).<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, certain words cannot be decomposed such as \u201c<strong>steam<\/strong>\u201d or \u201c<strong>mosquito<\/strong>\u201d in English. These words are only made out of one morpheme.<\/p>\n<p>Generally speaking, there are two main types of morphemes: grammatical and lexical. Grammatical morphemes belong to a \u201cclosed\u201d category, whereas lexical morphemes belong to an \u201copen\u201d category.
