To make it simple, utterance could be defined as &#8220;what a human being produces when addressing another human being&#8221;, or &#8220;a group of pronounced sounds to which a meaning can be associated&#8221;. In linguistics, this concept is associated with the definition of a sentence: a sentence is an utterance, but an utterance can have several sentences. The interjection &#8220;ouch!&#8221; isn&#8217;t a grammatical sentence, but the meaning is clear, so it is indeed an utterance. &#8220;Ouch!
