Discussions will address<strong> how to build a future for the languages of the French overseas alongside the French language<\/strong>. The aim here is to reach a set of recommendations either in the form of a <strong>charter<\/strong> or a <strong>checklist<\/strong> bringing together the command of French and the promotion of the regional languages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">People from Outre-mer do not necessarily speak French as a mother tongue, yet they\u2019re expected to evolve under French law and within a French-speaking professional environment. Therefore, the purpose of a language policy specific to the French overseas territories should be to help these citizens feel &#8220;comfortable&#8221; with their languages and the plurality of their cultural identities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The point for the organizers, therefore, has nothing to do with opposing the necessary command of French (the common language, that of the Republic, and education) and the no less necessary recognition of regional, indigenous, or mother languages. In fact, how these languages fit in social life, education, cultural practices, etc. is being stated in terms of &#8220;complementarity&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Different workshops will be handling the following issues:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211; <strong>the use of languages<\/strong>: plurilingualism, individual and social practices;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211; <strong>language &#8220;equipment&#8221;<\/strong>: from speaking to writing, language description and tools;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211; <strong>language transmission<\/strong>: taking native languages and cultural acquisition into account in the teaching of French, defining how these languages and acquisitions might fit in the education system;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;<strong> language technology<\/strong>, the presence of languages on the Web and social networks;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211; <strong>the role of languages in building a common identity<\/strong>;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;<strong> language and artistic creation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The convention is not being held as an academic conference per se, and everyone is welcome.
