It belongs to the K\u2019iche\u2019 branch, and is close to K\u2019ichee\u2019 and Tz\u2019utujiil. Most speakers of Kaqchikel live in the volcanic region of Chimaltenango, in central-western Guatemala, near Lake Atitl\u00e1n.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sorosoro.org\/en\/videos-in-kaqchikel\" target=\"_blank\">Watch all videos in<\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sorosoro.org\/en\/videos-in-kaqchikel\" target=\"_blank\"> Kaqchikel<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<h5>What is the Maya New Year?<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the objectives of our team, who shot the videos on the <strong>Kaqchikel language<\/strong>, was to attend a traditional <strong>Maya New Year <\/strong>ceremony, this year precisely taking place on February 22, 2009.\u00a0<strong>Sorosoro <\/strong>was granted the rare opportunity to film this celebration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the shooting our team interviewed the New Year master of ceremony, B\u2019alam Tija, who told us how sad he was to witness <strong>the decline of the Kaqchikel culture <\/strong>among the younger generations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The ceremony was held near the ancient <strong>Kaqchikel<\/strong> capital, Iximche\u2019, and lasted a whole day. A month starts on day 0 and ends on day 19. The 5 day month starts on day 0 and ends on day 4.<\/p>\n<p>The first month of the Chol\u2019ab\u2019 calendar is called <strong>Pop<\/strong>, and the last (the 5 day month) is called <strong>Wayeb\u2019<\/strong>. Therefore, a solar year starts on<strong> Pop day 0<\/strong> and ends on <strong>Wayeb\u2019 day 4<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Cholq\u2019ij<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Cholq\u2019ij calendar counts 20 days combining with 13 numbers (20 \u00d7 13 = 260).<\/p>\n<p>In Kaqchikel, the days of the week are: Imox, Iq\u2019, Aq\u2019ab\u2019al, K\u2019at, Kan, Kame, Kej, Q\u2019anil, toj, Tz\u2019i\u2019, B\u2019atz\u2019, E, Aj, I\u2019x, Tz\u2019ikin, Ajmaq, No\u2019j, Tijax, Kawoq, and Ajpu\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Here is how days combine with numbers:<\/p>\n<p>Jun (1) <strong>Imox<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ka\u2019I\u2019 (2) <strong>Iq\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oxi\u2019 (3) <strong>Aq\u2019ab\u2019al<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026 <\/strong>all the way to Oxlajuj (13) <strong>Aj<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>When the calendar reaches 13, the last number, it continues back to number 1 combined with the day that follows. Therefore:<\/p>\n<p>Jun (1) <strong>I\u2019x<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ka\u2019i\u2019 (2) <strong>Tz\u2019ikin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oxi (3) <strong>Ajmaq<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2026 until the last day, Wuqu\u2019 (7)<strong> Ajpu\u2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The calendar then goes back to the first day (Imox), while the counting continues along with number 8:<\/p>\n<p>Waqxaqi\u2019 (8) <strong>Imox<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>B\u2019eleje\u2019 (9) <strong>Iq\u2019<\/strong>\u2026 and so on.<\/p>\n<p>According to this system, the calendar returns to Jun (1) <strong>Imox<\/strong> when it has reached 260 days, and a new cycle begins.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What are the Mam, the \u201ccargadores del A\u00f1o\u201d?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Among the 20 days of the Cholq\u2019ij calendar, 4 of these days are called <strong>Mam<\/strong>, the \u201ccargadores del A\u00f1o\u201d (those who carry the year).<\/p>\n<p>There are several \u201ccargadores del A\u00f1o\u201d systems used around different areas of the Maya territory, but the most common is the one that matches the days <strong>Iq&#8217;<\/strong>, <strong>Kej<\/strong>, <strong>E<\/strong>, <strong>No\u2019j<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201ccargadores del A\u00f1o\u201d days bear the responsibility to \u201ccarry\u201d, to protect their corresponding year. And that is how the solar and the lunar years combine, because each \u201cCargador\u201d is to protect the universe during 365 days.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Maya New Year<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In short, the Maya New Year is the <strong>0 Pop<\/strong> day, which brings a new \u201cCargador de A\u00f1o\u201d: precisely that of the 0 Pop day. This year\u2019s \u201cCargador\u201d is Julajuj (11) Iq\u2019, last year\u2019s was Lajuj (10) No\u2019j, next year\u2019s will be Kab\u2019lajuj (12) Kej, an so on\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The Maya New Year does not match the Gregorian calendar. It regularly takes place in the first days of April but the date changes every 4 years because of the Gregorian leap year. It took place on April 4th between 2004 and 2007, April 3rd between 2008 and 2011; it\u2019ll be on April 2nd between 2012 and 2015, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, however, the date of Maya New Year ceremony differs in certain areas. It is celebrated on the Guatemalan Altiplano 40 days before it is celebrated in the Maya lowlands (northern Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, south Mexico), where the ceremony takes place in April. One of the reasons for this difference is the exclusively oral conservation of the Maya calendars over the last centuries.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The month of Wayeb\u2019<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The last month of the year, Wayeb\u2019, is very important for the Maya: the whole 5 days of this month are \u201creserved\u201d, devoted to the transition of authority. One thanks the ending <strong>Mam<\/strong> and prepares to receive a new one. Everything that has happened during the year, good or bad, at personal or community scale, all the past year\u2019s events are thought over and evaluated. Offerings are presented as a sign of gratitude, with hope to be washed from anything negative the ending year might have brought along. Objectives and ways to fulfil these objectives are planned for the following period.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201creserved\u201d days end on the <strong>0 Pop <\/strong>day, where the new year and new <strong>Mam<\/strong> are received. It\u2019s a huge celebration, a very joyful celebration. On that day, all the new projects are submitted to the new <strong>Mam<\/strong>, to whom we as for support in the fulfilment of these projects. We ask for his protection, for wealth upon crops and herds.
