The main focus of the PARADISEC<\/strong> project (Pacific and Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures<\/em>) is the digitisation of audio files originating from the Pacific region<\/strong> (Oceania, East and South-East Asia) and threatened with loss<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In particular it aims to make this data sustainable and accessible to future generations, and to support cultural renewal<\/strong> of the communities concerned.<\/p>\n

This project is funded by the Australian Research Council<\/em> and hosted by four Australian universities.<\/p>\n

After a successful interdisciplinary conference in 2006, dedicated to fieldwork-generated digital data, PARADISEC will repeat the experience at the end of 2011.<\/p>\n

This second conference entitled “Sustainable data from digital research: Humanities perspectives on digital scholarship” will be held at the University of Melbourne<\/strong> from December 12 to 14<\/strong>. It will be centered on the costs and benefits of digital technologies.<\/p>\n

The scientific papers will cover a variety of issues related to conservation, accessibility (including to those who have little access to computers or the internet) and the use of digital data.<\/p>\n

It is too late to send abstracts for proposals for the published volume of the conference; nevertheless abstracts for papers to be presented but not published can be submitted up until May 27<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Full papers for those who want them published in the peer-reviewed volume will be required by August 5th<\/strong>. The edited volume will be available as a book at the conference and will be hosted in an open-access online repository at Sydney University.<\/p>\n
