It was the only country still opposing the Declaration, after Canada supported it in November<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We must bear in mind the <strong>alarming situation of Native Americans<\/strong> in the United States: according to UN figures, they are 62% more likely to commit <strong>suicide<\/strong> than the general population and 600 times more likely to contract tuberculosis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Across the world, indigenous peoples are victims of marginalization and discrimination (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sorosoro.org\/en\/january-10-2011-screening-of-samson-delilah-at-ehess-ecole-des-hautes-etudes-en-sciences-sociales-a-paris-a-film-in-the-warlpiri-language-directed-by-australian-aboriginal-filmmaker-warwick-tho\">read for example Sorosoro&#8217;s recent article on an Australian Aboriginal director&#8217;s film, <em>Samson &amp; Delilah<\/em>)<\/a>.  Taking stock of their plight, the <strong>UN General Assembly<\/strong> adopted a Declaration in <strong>2007<\/strong> to set an <strong>international standard against which governments can be judged<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Three article in this Declaration (13, 14 and 16) address specifically the issue of indigenous languages protection. They proclaim the rights of indigenous peoples to revitalize, use and pass down their language, by creating for instance their own media and schools.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Despite its value<\/strong>, the UN Declaration remains aspirational, because it is <strong>not legally binding<\/strong>. And recently, as reported by Sorosoro, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sorosoro.org\/en\/january-12-2011-kaqchikel-community-radio-station-launched-in-guatemala\">Kaqchikel community radio station in Guatemala<\/a> has been temporarily shut down followig a police raid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As he announced his decision to sign the Declaration, <strong>President Obama declared: \u00ab\u00a0What matters far more than words \u2013 what matters far more than any resolution or declaration \u2013 are actions to match those words\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong>.
