After the success of the previous 1st International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation (ICLDC) <\/strong>in early 2009, the organizers have planned a second one to be held February 11-13, 2011 <\/strong>on the University of Hawai\u2018i at Manoa campus<\/strong>. This 2nd Conference aims to continue the work started two years ago on the subject \u201cSupporting Small Languages Together\u201d<\/strong>, by reviewing the different approaches to linguistic research<\/strong> on the one hand and the revitalization of these languages<\/strong> on the other .<\/p>\n

Two days of optional technical training workshops<\/strong> will precede the conference (Feb. 9-10<\/strong>). These workshops will provide training in tools such as Flex, Toolbox and ELAN, and an introduction to the use of video in language documentation.<\/p>\n

The program also includes, on February 10 evening, a screening event of short films in and about endangered languages<\/strong>, selected by Rozenn Milin <\/strong>(Sorosoro Foundaton) and Melissa Bisagni<\/strong> (Smithsonian Institution). The audience will discover works of fiction and animation films in languages such as Ikpeng (Brazil), Navajo (United-States), Saami (Norway) or Welsh (United-Kingdom).<\/p>\n

The conference itself will be held February 11-13, 2011<\/strong>. Linguists from the whole world will discuss documentation methods, their work among indigenous peoples, revitalization actions, language teaching etc. Rozenn Milin will speak again in this context to expose the audiovisual documentation of endangered languages inititiated by Sorosoro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

The event will end, on February 14-15<\/strong>, with a field-study trip to the Hilo campus<\/strong>, on the Big Island of Hawai’i. Participants will learn about actions implemented over the past 27 years in order to promote the revitalization of the Hawaiian language<\/strong>, in particular immersion curriculums.<\/p>\n
