{"id":39033,"date":"2011-01-29T00:01:48","date_gmt":"2011-01-28T23:01:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sorosoro.org\/?p=39033"},"modified":"2011-01-25T22:49:01","modified_gmt":"2011-01-25T21:49:01","slug":"january-29-2011-%e2%80%9cas-nutayunean%e2%80%9d-a-documentary-on-native-american-wopanaak-language-to-be-screened-at-international-film-festival-in-santa-barbara-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sorosoro.org\/en\/2011\/01\/january-29-2011-%e2%80%9cas-nutayunean%e2%80%9d-a-documentary-on-native-american-wopanaak-language-to-be-screened-at-international-film-festival-in-santa-barbara-usa\/","title":{"rendered":"January 29, 2011: \u201c\u00c2s Nutayune\u00e2n\u201d, a documentary on Native American W\u00f4pan\u00e2ak language, to be screened at International Film Festival in Santa Barbara, USA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The Santa Barbara International Film Festival<\/strong> this year will honor the <strong>W\u00f4pan\u00e2ak<\/strong> language, <strong>one of the oldest languages in the United States<\/strong> (also known as Massachusetts or Wampanoag language), with the screening of <strong>Anne Makepeace\u2019s documentary <\/strong>&#8220;<strong>\u00c2s Nutayune\u00e2n<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This film, produced in part by the American program <strong>Cultural Survival<\/strong>, shows <strong>how in the mid 19th century English supplanted W\u00f4pan\u00e2ak<\/strong>, the Amerindian language spoken by the inhabitants of New England, in the North-East of the United States. <strong>Its decline began in the 17th century<\/strong> as violent epidemics fell upon these indigenous people, and accelerated with the arrival of English colonists and the American Revolution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>But the film focuses principally on the language\u2019s ongoing revitalization in Massachusetts, initiated in 1993<\/strong> by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wlrp.org\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>W\u00f4pan\u00e2ak Language Reclamation Project (WLRP)<\/strong><\/a>, and conducted through <strong>second language acquisition curriculums for adults, a \u201cno English\u201d curriculum for all ages and immersion camps, in the few communities that still exist: Aquinnah, Assonet, Mashpee, Herring Pond&#8230;<\/strong> Many teachers, students and other supporters of WLRP testify in this documentary, which took three years of research and filming.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An important figure in the film is <strong>Jessie \u201cLittle Doe\u201d Baird,<\/strong> of the Mashpee community. This energetic activist is one of the major contributors to the survival of W\u00f4pan\u00e2ak and her wish is to see the descendants of the Wampanoag speak fluently their ancestral language and use it as a language of communication.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For the record, W\u00f4pan\u00e2ak is iconic for having being the <strong>first Native American language in which the Bible was translated, in 1663 by missionary John Eliot<\/strong>. It belongs to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sorosoro.org\/en\/algic-or-algonquian-languages\">Algonquian family<\/a><\/strong>, one of the numerous families the 300 Native American languages are related to.
