The Igbo<\/strong> country, better known as Biafra<\/strong>, is located in southeast Nigeria<\/strong>. Ever since the war<\/strong> that ravaged it between 1967 and 1970<\/strong>, no work on this region had been produced in French. This is now done with Fran\u00e7oise Ugochukwu<\/strong>\u2019s study, published by L’Harmattan<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n

A French national married to a Nigerian, Fran\u00e7oise Ugochukwu knows the Igbo country well for having lived long in it. Back in Europe in 1995 after 24 years in Nigeria, she is currently professor of comparative literature at the Open University in Great Britain, and associate researcher at CNRS-LLACAN in Villejuif, France.<\/p>\n

Her name might be familiar to Sorosoro visitors since our website hosts her description sheet of Igbo<\/a> (in French).<\/p>\n

This language (in Igbo: As\u1ee5s\u1ee5 Igbo<\/strong>) belongs to the Niger-Congo family<\/a><\/strong>, and one of its characteristic traits is the use of tones<\/strong>, like its Yoruba neighbor. Spoken by 20 to 35 million people<\/strong>, it is one of Nigeria\u2019s major languages together with Hausa and <\/strong>Yoruba<\/strong>, although the official language is English. It is the vector of a rich culture of traditions, stories and community values, described by Fran\u00e7oise Ugochukwu in her work.<\/p>\n
