Known as the Atlernative Nobel Price, the \u00ab\u00a0Right Livelihood Award\u00a0\u00bb <\/strong>has been given this year to a Catholic Bishop, Erwin Kr\u00e4utler<\/strong>, who officiates in the Xingu<\/strong> region of brazilian Amazonia<\/strong>. He is also President of the Indigenist Missionary Council (CIMI)<\/strong> of the Catholic Church in Brazil.<\/p>\n

The awards ceremony was held on December 7 at the Swedish Parliament<\/strong>. He was honored \u00ab\u00a0for a lifetime of work for the human and environmental rights of indigenous peoples <\/strong>and for his tireless efforts to save the Amazon forest from destruction\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Bishop Kra\u00fctler delivered a stirring speach<\/strong> to warn about the fate of indian populations of Amazonia<\/strong> like the Guaranis<\/strong>, whose \u00ab\u00a0pain, despair and insecurity\u00a0\u00bb he highlighted.<\/p>\n

Let us remind ourselves that today Guaranis in Brazil are numbered at around 30,000, while other communities live in Argentina, Bolivia and especially in Paraguay where their language enjoys official status, and is taught on the same level as Spanish.<\/p>\n

In Brazil, they used to dwell on a vast territory of forests and plains, but are now confined to small areas or live in makeshift camps along roads. Deeply affected by this situation, they are suffering from an unprecedented wave of suicides<\/strong> in South America.<\/p>\n

After having condemned this \u00ab\u00a0genocide in progress\u00a0\u00bb of Guaranis<\/strong>, Bishop Kr\u00e4utler went on to warn the assistance about the fate of Indians living in the Xingu region<\/strong>, whose livelihood is threatened by the construction of the Belo Monte mega-dam<\/strong>. Indigenous peoples, he stated, \u00ab\u00a0know\u00a0very well that they\u00a0will not survive if\u00a0Amazonia continues to be disrespected and razed. And they know that planet Earth will suffer irreversible consequences\u00a0by this cruel destruction \u00bb.<\/p>\n
