The 25th annual \u201cIowa Culture and Language Conference”<\/a>, organised by the “Northwest Area Education Agency\u201d<\/a> (AEA), will take place from November 1 to 3, 2010, in Iowa,\u00a0an opportunity to reflect on the topic of teaching to English Language Learners (ELL), and the possible implications of their families and communities in this process.<\/p>\n

.<\/span><\/p>\n

A call for papers is open until August 5, and addresses the following subjects:<\/p>\n

–\tTeaching to English language learners<\/strong> (ELL) from early childhood to higher education: practical hints for teachers, literacy, establishment of a program, reflecting on the acquisition of a second language, etc.<\/p>\n

–\tFamily and Community involvement<\/strong>. Three main topics: \u201cNo child left behind\u201d, \u201cdemographics\u201d and \u201ccommunity efforts\u201d.<\/p>\n

–\tBilingual and native speaking staff<\/strong>:\u00a0producing guidelines, programs, etc.<\/p>\n

–\tThe administration of a school<\/strong>: providing effective educational programs, grant opportunities, budgeting etc.<\/p>\n

–\tNewcomers<\/strong>:\u00a0skill enhancement for staff who work with newcomer programs, exploration of the traditional cultures of Iowa’s refugees and immigrants – including several sessions sponsored by the Iowa Arts Council and a Division of the Department of Cultural Affairs.<\/p>\n

.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Northwest AEA is a regional agency that provides school improvement services for students, teachers and administrators: it organises an annual ICLC<\/em> in order to advocate for culturally and\/or linguistically diverse students and their families, educators, as well as service providers.<\/p>\n

Presentation application forms are available on the Northwest AEA website<\/a>. Forms and abstracts must be submitted before August 5, 2010, to Teresa Angerman at Northwest AEA: tangerman@nwaea.k12.ia.us.<\/p>\n
