It belongs to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sorosoro.org\/en\/niger-congo-languages\">Niger-Congo language family<\/a><\/strong> (North Atlantic branch). The language counts around <strong>6 200 speakers <\/strong>and is considered endangered by the UNESCO.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sorosoro sent a filming crew to Senegal in April and March 2010, as part of our collaboration with the <em>S\u00e9n\u00e9langues<\/em> project launched by the <em>CNRS<\/em> based <em><a href=\"http:\/\/llacan.vjf.cnrs.fr\/\">LLACAN<\/a><\/em> lab dedicated to \u00ab Speech, Languages and Cultures of Sub-Saharan Africa \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sokhna Bao-Diop, Ph.D student in linguistics and member of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ddl.ish-lyon.cnrs.fr\/senelangues\/index.asp\"><em>S\u00e9n\u00e9langues<\/em> project<\/a>, was there with out filming crew. We are in <strong>Niamone<\/strong>, close to Ziguinchor, <strong>Casamance <\/strong>; and with everyone around a bonfire storyteller <strong>Issouf Coly<\/strong> begins tales that may remind some of the La Fontaine Fables. Though here, not a single reference to foxes or frogs: these are the forests of Africa, and the characters brought into the stories are the <strong>hyena<\/strong>, <strong>hare<\/strong>, <strong>monitor lizard<\/strong>,<strong> Billy goat<\/strong> and <strong>lion<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Those who are familiar to the fables La Fontaine or Aesop once told will have no trouble grasping the deeper sense of these stories, which undoubtedly reach beyond mere animal stories. We\u2019d be happy to receive your comments should any of you have the keys to decipher the four tales we\u2019ll be introducing along these next few weeks.
