The Sorosoro <\/strong>crew has gathered several narratives along their filming sessions. Tales, myths, and epics are strong vectors for the transmission of languages <\/strong>and cultures<\/strong>. Either from Gabon<\/strong>, Guatemala<\/strong> or elsewhere, either in Akele, Punu or Kaqchikel, Sorosoro is happy to introduce them, here.<\/p>\n

The Mumbwanga: an epic of the Punu in Gabon<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/h5>\n

Punu<\/strong> is the language<\/strong> of the Bapunu, second largest ethnic group in Gabon<\/strong> in terms of population. It\u2019s a Bantu language<\/strong>, spoken in the Tchibanga area. The increasingly important movement of Bapunu people towards larger urban areas is causing a gradual loss <\/strong>of their language<\/strong> and cultural <\/strong>knowledge.<\/p>\n

Sorosoro <\/strong>was granted the rare opportunity to film this one of the main founding narratives of the\u00a0Punu <\/strong>ethnic group. Nowadays very few storytellers are able to produce the Mumbwanga epic in its full version.<\/p>\n

The Tale of the Upstream God and the Downstream God in Akele (Gabon)<\/span><\/h5>\n

Akele<\/strong> is the language of the Akele people from Gabon<\/strong>. It\u2019s a Bantu language<\/strong>, whose speakers are scattered around various parts the country. The Akele<\/strong> are fishermen and farmers living along the Ogoou\u00e9 and Ngounie rivers, and in the lake region around Lambar\u00e9n\u00e9.<\/p>\n

A tale (Apiret<\/em>, in Akele) is an oral genre used as an educational tool. The\u00a0Tale of the Upstream God and the Downstream God<\/em> raises God as the source of knowledge and wisdom.<\/p>\n

Animal tales in Baynunk (Senegal)<\/h5>\n

Let’s take off on a journey through the land of animals<\/strong>, in Senegal<\/strong>, in the company of storyteller Issouf Coly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We are close to Ziguinchor, Casamance <\/strong>; and with everyone around a bonfire Issouf begins tales that may remind some of the La Fontaine Fables. Though here, not a single reference to foxes or frogs: these are the forests of Africa, and the characters brought into the stories are the hyena<\/strong>, hare<\/strong>, monitor lizard<\/strong>, Billy goat<\/strong> and lion<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n

Moussa, known as \u00ab the little cat \u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019re unfortunately unable to provide context to this story, told by S\u00e9kou Djikabo Coly<\/strong> and devoted to quite a disreputable character, Moussa, nicknamed \u00ab the little cat \u00bb. This is Casamance, on Baynunk territory<\/strong>, near Niamone. Moussa is a Jola, raised by the Muslim Mandinka people<\/strong>, who returns to loot the Baynunk and kidnap for ransom\u2026 something of a genuine highwayman.<\/p>\n

But Moussa The Little Cat will not have the last word<\/strong>. The Baynunk are wise and clever, and they\u2019ll end up getting rid of the crook\u2026<\/p>\n
