The <strong>Kaqchikel<\/strong> mainly live in the volcanic area of Chimaltenango, in the western part of central <strong>Guatemala<\/strong>, a poor area, essentially rural, where corn farming plays an extensive role.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today we\u2019d like you to hear linguist <strong>Nikte Sis Iboy <\/strong>who was there with us. As you\u2019ll see in this video, Nikte\u2019s moving intervention in a call for the preservation of <strong>Kaqchikel <\/strong>and all <strong>Mayan languages <\/strong>for that matter, as the loss of a<strong> language <\/strong>ultimately implies the loss of <strong>knowledge, culture and identity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As you\u2019ll also notice, Nikte isn&#8217;t addressing us in <strong>Kaqchikel<\/strong> but in her own mother tongue, <strong>Achi<\/strong>, another <strong>Mayan <\/strong><strong>language<\/strong>, dialectal variation of <strong>K\u2019ichee\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There\u2019re as many as 30 <strong>Mayan languages<\/strong> (21 in <strong>Guatemala<\/strong>, 9 in Mexico), all belonging to the same<strong> language group<\/strong>. But although they\u2019re all <strong>Mayan languages<\/strong>, they are as different to one another as for example French, Russian or Kurd.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Kaqchikel <\/strong>counts around half a million speakers, it is one of the most widely spoken <strong>Mayan languages<\/strong>, along with <strong>K\u2019ichee\u2019, Yukateko, Wasteko, Mam<\/strong>, and <strong>Q\u2019eqchi<\/strong>.
