New words in Punu<\/h5>\n

Punu is the language of the Bapunu<\/strong>, second largest ethnic group in Gabon<\/strong> in terms of population. It\u2019s a Bantu language<\/strong>, spoken in the Tchibanga area. The increasingly important movement of Bapunu people towards larger urban areas is causing a gradual loss <\/strong>of their language<\/strong> and cultural <\/strong>knowledge.<\/p>\n

New words in Mpongwe<\/h5>\n

Following the Akoa Pygmies, nowadays extinct, the Mpongwe<\/strong> people are the first inhabitants of Libreville, on the north bank of the Gabon<\/strong> estuary. The number of Mpongwe <\/strong>speakers has now dropped under 5000. In awareness <\/strong>of their traditional heritage<\/strong> being threatened with extinction<\/strong>, the Mpongwe<\/strong> have created structures for the protection<\/strong> of their language <\/strong>and culture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Here it is\u00a0Henriette<\/strong> and Kialla<\/strong> who utter some new words of their language!<\/p>\n

New words in Tamasheq<\/h5>\n

Tamasheq<\/strong> (or Tamajeq, or Tamaheq, stemming from the word Tamazight) is spoken by the Tuareg<\/strong>, a nomadic people that has been settled in the desert areas of North Africa<\/strong> for millennia, over a vast territory reaching from Mali to Libya, from Burkina Faso to Algeria, and including Niger. There are around one million<\/strong> speakers of Tamasheq.<\/p>\n

Like Kabyle, Shawia, or Rifian, Tamasheq is in fact a variant of Berber<\/strong> (or Tamazight), a group of languages that covers the whole of North Africa (Marocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Niger, Mauritania, Mali, and Burkina Faso), not to mention a large diaspora in Europe and America.<\/p>\n

In this video, poet and teacher\u00a0Mohamed Hamza<\/strong> rightly points out that, like any language confronted to the challenges of globalization, his language includes neologisms invented by the younger generation and adaptions of foreign so-called “international” common words \u2013 considering how similar they are in every language. Local taste, of course.<\/p>\n
