A language with numerous dialectal variations sometimes develops a <strong>common form<\/strong> through consensus, a form understandable by all speakers of the different dialects. The term <em>koine<\/em> comes from the first example known in History:\u00a0Greek<em> ko\u00efn\u00e8<\/em> (\u201c<strong>common language<\/strong>\u201d), which in late ancient Greece enabled the various Greek political entities to maintain commercial and diplomatic relations despite all their different dialects. <em>Greek koine<\/em> was spoken all over the Mediterranean Basin, and may very well be the very origin of Modern Greek. Even when a koine language is an artificial construction \u2013 which was probably not the case of <em>Greek koine<\/em> \u2013 some parents might still hand it down to their children because of its social resonance, instead of handing down their own dialectal variation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are many contemporary examples of koine languages: Modern Standard Arabic, for example, as opposed to <strong>Arabic dialects<\/strong>, or <em>Batua<\/em> (\u201d<em><strong>Unified Basque<\/strong><\/em>\u201c), the official language of the Basque region in France.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/en\/all-about-languages-\u200b\u200bin-the-world\/the-new-languages\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/bouton_retour.jpg\" alt=\"bouton_retour\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-65133\" \/><\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"\/en\/all-about-languages-\u200b\u200bin-the-world\/the-new-languages\/\"><strong>Back to previous page<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Page created in collaboration with Michel Launey &#038; Alain Kihm, 2009. &nbsp; A koine language is the \u201cinner-dialectal\u201d variation of a language.
