Data on the X\u00e2r\u00e2gur\u00e8 language<\/h5>\n

Geographical area<\/strong>: X\u00e2r\u00e2c\u00f9\u00f9 custom area (aire coutumi\u00e8re<\/em>) of New Caledonia. X\u00e2r\u00e2gur\u00e8 is spoken at Thio-Mission (St-Philippo II), in parts of St-Michel, St-Pierre and St-Paul and in all the coastal villages between Thio and N\u2019goye: Port Bouquet, Petit Borindi, Grand Borindi and St-Jean-Baptiste. Some speakers of X\u00e2r\u00e2gur\u00e8 also live in Ouinan\u00e9, on the West coast of the main island (la Grande Terre).<\/p>\n

Classification<\/strong>: Like all Kanak languages<\/a> (with the exception of Fagauvea), X\u00e2r\u00e2gur\u00e8 belongs to the Oceanic branch of the Austronesian Language family<\/a>. The Kanak languages of New Caledonia\u2019s main island and the Loyalty Islands form a subgroup of the Oceanic branch. Within this branch, X\u00e2r\u00e2gur\u00e8 belongs to the group of southern languages, alongside Aji\u00eb, T\u00eer\u00ee and X\u00e2r\u00e2c\u00f9\u00f9<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Number of speakers<\/strong>: According to the ISEE, there are 758 speakers of Xaragure over the age of 14.<\/p>\n

Status<\/strong>: It is a regional (or local) language.<\/p>\n

Written documents<\/strong>: There is no written tradition in X\u00e2r\u00e2gur\u00e8. The only documents are those produced as a result of the research done by linguist Claire Moyse-Faurie of the LACITO-CNRS centre, who has collected some texts in Xaragure and is currently working on developing a lexicon.<\/p>\n

Teaching<\/strong>: Some experimental teaching in X\u00e2r\u00e2gur\u00e8 was carried out at the Borindi Primary School (in the Thio district), under the PHAX programme.<\/p>\n

Audio recordings<\/strong>: Moyse-Faurie recorded oral histories on audio cassette in 1976 and 1980. The 1980 recordings were used to create the X\u00e2r\u00e2gur\u00e8 texts which feature on the CD-rom produced for the Tjibaou Cultural Centre (a CNRS-ADCK co-production).<\/p>\n

Video recordings<\/strong>: The Sorosoro programme carried out a film shoot in October and November 2010 in the region in which Xaragure is spoken. The video shot at this time is the only existing footage of X\u00e2r\u00e2gur\u00e8.<\/p>\n

Vitality and transmission<\/strong>: UNESCO considers X\u00e2r\u00e2gur\u00e8 to be an endangered language (level 1 of 5 on their scale).<\/p>\n

\n

Linguistic information<\/h5>\n

Although lacking documentation, X\u00e2r\u00e2gur\u00e8 resembles X\u00e2r\u00e2c\u00f9\u00f9<\/a> closely enough that they share the same phonological system.<\/p>\n
