{"id":5474,"date":"2009-11-10T21:03:00","date_gmt":"2009-11-10T20:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sorosoro.org\/?page_id=5474"},"modified":"2011-02-15T01:23:36","modified_gmt":"2011-02-15T00:23:36","slug":"matacoan-languages","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.sorosoro.org\/en\/matacoan-languages\/","title":{"rendered":"Matacoan languages"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Where are Matacoan languages spoken ?<\/h5>\n<p>These languages are spoken in Argentina, in Bolivia and in Paraguay.<\/p>\n<h5>Total number of speakers (estimates) :<\/h5>\n<p>Roughly 60 000 according to the ethnologue.com web site (SIL)<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Classification<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Matacoan group includes 4 or 5 active languages according to sources.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\"><strong>Chorote<\/strong> (alternative name: <em>Yof\u00faaha<\/em>) : 2 000 speakers according to UNESCO and 2 300 according to SIL<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\"><strong>Mac\u00e1<\/strong> (alternative names: <em>Towolhi<\/em> ; <em>Toothle<\/em> ; <em>Nynaka<\/em> ; <em>Mak\u2019\u00e1<\/em>) : 1500 speakers according to SIL<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\"><strong>Nivacl\u00e9<\/strong> (alternative name: <em>Ajlujlay<\/em>) : 13 700 speakers according to SIL<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\"><strong>Wich\u00ed<\/strong> (alternative name: <em>Mataco<\/em>) : 42 000 speakers according to SIL<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Comments on the classification of Matacoan languages :<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The name &#8220;Mataco&#8221; having a pejorative connotation, this family is also called &#8220;Mataguayan\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We have adopted the classification proposed by Campbell (1997).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Wich\u00ed is a group of 3 dialects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Kaufmann suggested a hypothetical grouping of the Matacoan family with the Waikuruan, the Charruane and the Mascoian families. The grouping would consist of a single Macro-Waikuruan super family.  However, according to Campbell, such a grouping is hypothetical at this time.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Are Matacoan languages endangered ?<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chorote is an endangered language according to UNESCO, which also considers Nivacl\u00e9 and Wichi as two \u00ab vulnerable \u00bb languages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">UNESCO does not provide information on the vitality of maca but it is most probably also endangered.<\/p>\n<h5>Sources<\/h5>\n<p>Campbell, Lyle (1997). <em>American Indian languages: the historical linguistics of Native America<\/em>.
