Data on the Vera\u2019a language<\/h5>\n

Alternative names<\/strong>: Vatrata, Vanua Lava<\/p>\n

Classification<\/strong>: Austronesian language family<\/a>, Oceanic languages.<\/p>\n

Certain sources (including the SIL\u2019s Ethnologue<\/em>, 16th ed.) consider Vera\u2019a and Lemerig<\/a> as two variants of one and the same language known as Vatrata<\/em>.<\/p>\n

All the languages of Vanuatu, the country home to the world\u2019s largest linguistic diversity (110 languages for a population of around 200,000) belong to the same Oceanic branch of the Austronesian family. However, they do show a surprising diversity for languages belonging to the same family.<\/p>\n

Geographic area<\/strong>: Vanuatu, Banks Islands, island of Vanua Lava. Mainly in the village of Vera\u2019a, on the western coast of the island, and in a few hamlets north of the village.<\/p>\n

Number of speakers<\/strong>: Around 300, according to linguist Alexandre Fran\u00e7ois.<\/p>\n

Vitality & transmission<\/strong>: Vera\u2019a is an endangered language, according to UNESCO. Most speakers are at least Vera\u2019a\/Vur\u00ebs bilinguals, Vur\u00ebs being the dominant language of the island. The language is being taken over by Vur\u00ebs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Vera\u2019a is part of a documentation program led by DoBes<\/em>.<\/p>\n
