They are usually divided in two larger categories:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cUpper Svan\u201d, spoken in the Enguri valley, including the <em>Upper<\/em> and <em>Lower Bal<\/em> dialects<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cLower Svan\u201d, spoken along the Tskhenistskali River, including the dialect groups of <em>Lashkh<\/em>, <em>Lentekhian<\/em> and <em>Cholur<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Classification<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sorosoro.org\/en\/Family of South Caucasian or Kartvelian languages\">Family of South Caucasian or Kartvelian languages<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Geographic area<\/strong>: North-West of Georgia, in the mountain region South of Mount Elbrus, along the Enguri, Tskhenis-tskali and Kodori rivers. Some Svan speakers live on the territory of auto-proclaimed Abkhazia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Number of speakers<\/strong>: The UNESCO mentioned 80,000 speakers in 2005, but pointed out that the number may be exaggerated. DoBes does in fact estimate that the number of speakers \u201cdoes not exceed 30,000 people\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Status of the language: No official status. Georgian is the language of administration, education and the media.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Vitality and Transmission<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The UNESCO considers Svan as an endangered language.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All Svan speakers are at least bilingual in Spanish, some of them are even trilingual in Russian. Native speakers are usually old, transmittal of the language is slowing down, the young generations drop Svan for the official language. The language is only used within family circles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to DoBes, the decrease of Svan worsened in the 60s. Increasing economic difficulties led Svan populations to move into towns where the communities of speakers broke up among the urban population.
