The other main dialects are Kalaw Kawaw Ya,  Kulkalgaw Ya and Kawalgaw Ya. There use to be a koin\u00e8 form of Kala Lagaw Ya used as <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><em>lingua franca<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> all along the Torres Strait before colonization. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0.49cm; margin-bottom: 0.49cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><strong>Area:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><strong> <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Australia, Torres Straits Islands. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0.49cm; margin-bottom: 0.49cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><strong>Number of speakers : <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The 2005 National Indigenous Languages Survey Report estimated <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">approximately speakers 700 for the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Kalaw Lagaw Ya (designing probably the dialect) and 800 speakers for Kalaw Kawa Ya dialect. There\u2019s no data available for the speakers of the Kulkalgaw Ya and Kawalgaw Ya dialects.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0.49cm; margin-bottom: 0.49cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">T<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">he 2006 Australian Bureau of Statistics Census counted 1216 speakers, probably counting both <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Kalaw Lagaw Ya  and Kalaw Kawa Ya dialects.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0.49cm; margin-bottom: 0.49cm;\" lang=\"en-US\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>Language vitality &amp; transmission\u00a0: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0.49cm; margin-bottom: 0.49cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">According to Austlang, following the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">National Indigenous Languages Survey Report, Kalaw Lagaw Ya is highly endangered.
