Laughren <em>et al <\/em>(1996) identifies seven major dialects of Warlpiri: western Warlpiri, sometimes called \u201cWarrmarla\u201d ; north-western Warlpiri called \u201cNgardilypa\u201d; south-western Warlpiri called \u201cWawulya\u201d; central-northern Warlpiri called \u201cWarnayaka\u201d; southern Warlpiri referred to as \u201cNgaliya\u201d; Lander River Warlpiri, sometimes called \u201cYarlpiri\u201d as well as Warlpiri; and the most eastern Hansen River Warlpiri, often referred to as \u201cWakirti Warlpiri\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">See Kimberley Handbook for a different opinion on Warlpiri dialects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Classification<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sorosoro.org\/en\/macro-pama-nyungan-languages\">Macro-Pama-Nyungan<\/a>, Ngarga languages<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Area<\/strong>: The principal Warlpiri-speaking communities are Yuendumu (Yurntumu), Lajamanu, Nyirrpi and Willowra (Wirliyajarrayi) (Laughren 1996:1).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lander Creek below Mount Leichhardt; sand plain north of Mounts Turner, Saxby, and Doreen; northwest to beyond the Granites and Mount Frederick; northern boundary along 19\u00b0 latitude and Winnecke Creek. Western boundaries are with the Ngardi and Djaru tribes close to the Western Australia border (Tindale 1974).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Number of speakers<\/strong>: The 2005 National Indigenous Languages Survey Report estimated approximately 3000 speakers of Warlpiri, whereas the 2006 Australian Bureau of Statistics Census counted 2507 speakers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Language vitality &amp; transmission<\/strong>: Although one of the major Australian aboriginal languages in terms of number of speakers, Warlpiri is sometimes considered as a lightly endangered language.
