It is also spoken in Tambacounda, Mbour and Dakar. There is also a small Bedik community in Guinea and Mali.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Number of speakers<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2002, Christian NTM (New Tribes Mission) missionaries, who were the first to work on the language and elaborate syllabaries, estimated the number of Bedik living in Senegal was around 3380 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethnologue.com\/\">Ethnologue.com<\/a> 2009).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2009, the subprefecture of Bandafassi estimated there were less than 1000 speakers of Menik left in the area of Kedougou.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Status<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Menik is a <strong>national language<\/strong> of Senegal. It was codified in <strong>2004<\/strong>, including a decree on spelling and word separation. This decree sets a graphic code and convention basis that rule the spelling of the language.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Following <strong>codification<\/strong>, however, hardly anything has been done for the Menik language, likewise other languages of Senegal. The codification and recognition of minority languages as national languages have no significant impact on their promotion or proliferation as such.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Vitality &amp; transmission<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There\u2019s a <strong>high level of bilingualism<\/strong> in the areas where Menik is spoken:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In Bedik <strong>villages<\/strong>, le language is still handed down but the majority speaks fluent Fula and French, used daily.<\/li>\n<li>In <strong>cities<\/strong> such as Dakar and Tambacounda, the Bedik speak more French and Fula than Menik.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thus a large majority of Bedik is at least bilingual (very few exceptions) either in Menik-Fula or Menik-Malinke, and sometimes trilingual in Mebnik-Fula-French.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Media \/ Literature \/ Instruction<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Menik is <strong>not used in the media<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The creation of a Menik script was made possible thanks to the work of missionaries. Among other studies on Bedik culture and Menik language:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>those of Mary Paule Ferry, one of the first to study Menik, who conducted extensive ethnolinguistic research on the subject<\/li>\n<li>Jacques Gomila, ethnologist.
