Umpila is an Australian language spoken in Queensland State (QLD): South of Cape Sidmounth to North of Massy Creek and hinterland (Thompson 1988:2); a narrow strip of coastline extending from Breakfast Creek, at the North of Princess Charlotte Bay, to cape Sidmouth (Thomson 1972:3).<\/p>\n

The Umpila dialect area occupies about 55 kilometers of narrow coastal plain and low hills from the Massey River to as far North as Cape Sidmouth (Chase and Sutton 1987:73).<\/p>\n

Number of speakers:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The most recent National Indigenous Language Survey <\/em>(NILS) in 2005 estimated 12 speakers of Umpila.<\/p>\n

Language vitality & transmission\u00a0: <\/strong><\/p>\n

On a scale of 0 to 5, the National Indigenous Language Survey<\/em> (NILS) classifies Umpila as a level 1 language, i.e. critically endangered.<\/p>\n

A documentation project funded by Hans Rausing Endangered Languages Project<\/em><\/a> was carried out between December 2006 to December 2009.<\/p>\n
