Drehu is the Kanak language that has the largest number of speakers; it is also one of the most documented. Outside the traditional settling area (Lifou and Tiga Islands), Drehu is spoken by the many Lifou who settled on Grande Terre (main island), especially in the area of Noumea. A relatively large number of Kanak have learned Drehu as a second language either for family or religious reasons.<\/p>\n

Belongs to the aire coutumi\u00e8re<\/em> (\u201ctraditional sphere\u201d) of Drehu.<\/p>\n

\n

As an evangelization language, Drehu was used by protestant missionaries on Sunday schools for children and adults literacy teaching purposes, therefore most people from Lifou island are able to read and write Drehu.<\/p>\n
