November 26, 2011: Indigenous cultural centre opens in Oaxaca, Mexico
The Dominican San Pablo de Indios convent has opened again after a six-year renovation, and as been reinvented as Centro Academico y Cultural San Pablo – the San Pablo Academic and Cultural Centre.
The intention here is to honor the indigenous past of the Oaxaca region, and promote the languages and culture of Zapotecs, Mixtecs, Mixes, and all other language groups in the State of Oaxaca.
The Centre teaches indigenous languages and cultures through various seminars, workshops, conferences and exhibitions.
A collaboration with the Museo Textil de Oaxaca is also on the way to reach further into weaving techniques and patterns that cannot be translated into Spanish at this point.
Coordinator Janet Chavez hopes to build links with universities in Mexico and elsewhere to bring students and develop cross-cultural exchange programs.
All the best to them!
